It’s 2018, and we’re surrounded by hundreds, if not thousands, of services. From subscription boxes, to delivery services, we’re all pretty spoiled in the options that we have. I was curious and wanted to try a meal delivery kit, so I tried Blue Apron.
I’m a member of a number of subscription/delivery services (more to blog on that later!) and I was pretty stoked to try out Blue Apron. I always see ads and posts about it, so I was curious as to how Blue Apron actually works.

What is Blue Apron?
Blue Apron is a meal kit delivery service that provides directions and fresh ingredients directly to your door, so you can skip the trip to the grocery store!
They have weekly meals planned that you can choose from and they deliver the ingredients directly to your door. Their ingredients are fresh and are delivered in a refrigerated box. They even have meals for vegetarians too.
Why I Chose Blue Apron
There are many meal kit services out there like HelloFresh and Plated. However, I liked Blue Apron because 1) I saw a lot of my favorite bloggers and influencers using them, and 2) I liked the idea of being able to choose between meals they have planned for certain weeks.
Honestly, I chose Blue Apron because I got an amazing first-time customer discount as well.
Why Meal Kit Services Are Awesome
Ever since I started working from home, my “work-mode” never turns off. I’m constantly working… and constantly putting off going to the grocery store or wanting to cook in general. Which is ironic, because I’m always home. When you’re an entrepreneur, you never. stop. working.
If you’re like me, and you hate going to the grocery store, then Blue Apron is a great choice!
Not only did I hate going to the grocery store, but any time I cooked, I always felt like I was making the same dishes over and over again. I could browse Pinterest for recipes (Follow me @SoVeryMeBlog!), but shopping for new ingredients I never use could be tricky. Blue Apron gave me NEW and FRESH ideas to make for dinner that I actually remake a lot of the recipes they have sent me in previous weeks.
Blue Apron Review 2018
Ordering with Blue Apron was a breeze. It’s just my Husband and Myself, so we opted for the 2-Person Meal Package. The average meal cost was $8.99 per person which was already saving us money vs. going out to eat (which we were doing a lot of).
What’s Promised with Blue Apron:
- Farm-Fresh, seasonal produce
- Meat with no added hormones
- Sustainably-sourced seafood
- Everything else you need for cooking (spices and knick knacks)
What I liked most was I was able to choose the day I got my delivery for the week. I wanted my box on a Monday so we could have 3 dinners for the week, and it was at my door before 11am!
The meals we received were beyond delicious! Not only were they totally different from the normal meals I make, but they were packed with flavor. To this day, Garrett still asks me to make some of the recipes we received. His number 1 request being the Spiced-Beef Pitas.
Meals we received our first week from Blue Apron
- Crispy Chicken & Italian Tomato Sauce
- Za-atar-Spiced Beef Pitas
- Tuscan-Spiced Chicken & Fregola Sarda
The recipes were easy-to-follow and were delicious. The boxes each came with direction cards for you to keep and remake the same recipe later. Each box had preportioned protein, spices, and everything needed to make the meal (with the exception of oils or butter, which I needed to get at the store). Each meal took around 30-minutes or less to cook.
Pros and Cons
Blue Apron Pros:
- Fresh ingredients delivered on your desired delivery day
- Easy-to-follow recipes
- Portioned out ingredients
- Saves you a trip to the grocery store
- Vegetarian options
- Can choose what proteins you prefer or want to stay away from
- Choice between meal recipes each week
- 2-person package or Family Packages available
Blue Apron Cons:
- Can be costly if you’re on a very tight budget ($8.99 per serving for two people)
- Doesn’t include Olive Oil or any other oils that some recipes call for
- Doesn’t cater to specific allergies (If you have peanut allergies, or in my case, pepper allergies – they do not have an option to remove these. So some recipes may not work for you)

I do enjoy Blue Apron as it did open my dinner menu up quite a bit! I do have a folder in my kitchen dedicated to the neat recipe cards I receive with each box. I’ve learned new cooking techniques as well while using Blue Apron.
The recipes are easy-to-follow and does not take long to make at all! I do recommend trying Blue Apron. The best thing is, if you’re unhappy with the service, you can cancel at any time.
