So you’ve started a blog and now you’re wondering How do I make money? If you’re like me, you’re probably fascinated with seeing pins on Pinterest about income reports and how to make money blogging. When I first started blogging, I was GLUED to those posts. It’s interesting to see how everyone finds ways to monetize their blogs and earn a living through blogging. I want to talk about how to make money blogging if you’re a new blogger!
I’ve blogged on and off for a few years now. I’ve owned about 5 blogs in total ranging from different niches. I have many different hobbies that I’ve adopted over the course of my 28 years of life. Everything from art to DIY. I recently started blogging more about blogging to help others who may not be as knowledgeable on the subject. All my professional career life has been about web design, blogging, social media management, and content creation. I. LOVE. IT.
I went full-time with my freelance work in 2017 and really started focusing on this blog in 2018. I want to share my knowledge with you and let you know how you can make money blogging. YES, it’s possible to make a full-time income writing about your hobbies and the things you love!
This post contains affiliate links, which means if you click through and make a purchase or sign up, I may make a commission at no additional cost to you. I only promote products I personally use and love.
Start a Blog
If you’re unfamiliar with how to start a blog, you’ll be surprised at how easy it can really be to get started. I will always recommend getting a self-hosted WordPress blog vs. a third party like Wix or SquareSpace for one reason… you’ll OWN your blog.
Personally, I use Siteground for my self-hosted WordPress blog. I made the switch from GoDaddy and have not looked back. The main reason I highly recommend Siteground, especially for new bloggers, is that they will do the hard part for you. When you sign up for a hosting plan, you can call their customer service and they will install WordPress for you within minutes!
Build a Relationship with your Blog Readers
One IMPORTANT thing you should focus on is the relationship with your readers. The first thing you do when you start a blog should be to focus on creating great content that’s fascinating or helpful to readers. Building a trust between you and your audience is key to success.
How To Make Money Blogging
There are several ways for bloggers to make money blogging. I want to go over how you can monetize your blog and start making money writing about the things you’re passionate about. Believe it or not, bloggers make money from blogging in more ways than just having ads on their blogs.
I’m going to go over how to make money on your blog by using different programs and offering services and products.

If you’ve been reading about how to start blogging or any other blogging tips, you’ve probably seen this term thrown around frequently.
Affiliate Marketing means essentially getting paid to promote other’s content or products in exchange for commissions/payment. There are affiliate programs for nearly every company and niche there is. This is a very popular way to make money blogging, because if you’re talking about products you love – chances are, people will be interested in trying it out too!
How Affiliate Marketing works is you talk about a product or service in a blog post or video and you get a special link that’s unique to you. This link tracks any clicks or engagement from the visitors. If they make a purchase or sign up using your unique link, you get a commission! This is at no additional cost to the user. Eventually, those sales will build up and can be a great revenue stream for your site.
The key to affiliate marketing is to only promote products you use and love! If you’re too sales-ey, people will get turned off and leave real quick. It’s pretty obvious when someone isn’t passionate about the product they’re trying to promote… so stick to things you have personally tried and recommend!
Popular Affiliate Marketing Programs for Beginner Bloggers
Amazon Associates is one of the more popular ones because you can get a link for nearly any product on the site. Who doesn’t love Amazon? If you’re talking about a specific product in your post, you can find the affiliate link (after you apply and get accepted!) and link it within your post.
Most companies have their own programs as well! If you’re interested in promoting products from a retail store or other business, you can simply google “company name + affiliate program”. Some businesses do go through a third party site such as ShareASale or Rakuten, but you will be redirected to their pages to apply.
There are Affiliate Programs for nearly everything and every niche:
- Fashion / Apparel
- Arts and DIY Products
- and More
Google Adsense and Display Ads
Google Adsense is a ad serving program to show display ads on your site. This is a great start if you want to monetize your blog right away. Ads from Google are rather nice looking and they even place ads based on where they predict they will do the best, which would increase your revenue!
Google Adsense does have a few requirements before applying, however. You should make sure you have enough unique content on your site and make sure you already have some traffic coming to your blog.
Eventually, when you have a lot of blog traffic, you can apply for other programs like MediaVine to make even more money with display ads.
Sell a Product or eCourse
Are you knowledgeable in a field you think visitors will be interested in? Have a solution to a problem that users are searching for? Another great way to make money on your blog is to sell a product, eBook, or eCourse.
You can create products on services such as PicMonkey or Canva and sell them on your blog. There are many services such as Teachable or SendOwl that allow you to sell courses on there. You can also use plugins like WooCommerce to sell digital products directly from your blog. Whatever you choose to do, be sure to research, research, research!
Sponsored Blog Posts
When you feel like you’ve built a good relationship with your readers and have built a good community on your social media channels, you can start reaching out to companies and brands to see if they would like to collaborate on a sponsored post on your blog! Treat these professionally though… most companies don’t want messages like “hey can you sponsor my blog”. Come up with a great pitch of your project/content and how you will promote their product/services.
Sponsored posts are great because you will get paid directly from the company/brand instead of waiting for customer action from Affiliate Marketing strategies.
It can take a lot of time to build a money making blog. Be patient and work hard on your content and marketing efforts and you will be rewarded! Blogging is definitely NOT a “get rich quick” scheme. Just have fun and enjoy the process!
