How to Start a Blog in 2018 in UNDER 10 MINUTES

March 21, 2018

So, you’re probably wondering: “Blogging seems great! But, where do I start?”. All bloggers have to start somewhere. No one starts off knowing everything. We all kind of learn as we go. Thankfully, some of us love to share our knowledge and help aspiring bloggers break into the blogging world. I want to share with you how to start a blog in 2018 in under 10 minutes with WordPress and talk about Blogging for Beginners.

This post contains affiliate links. If you choose to shop using these links, I do get a commission. This is at no additional cost to you! I only talk about products I personally use/believe in. By shopping using my affiliate link(s), it helps me continue with the blog and providing free content.

WHY YOU SHOULD START A BLOG

When I started this blog, I originally wanted to write about my general interests such as DIY, Lifestyle, and Home Decor. While I realize this is a broad niche, I figured writing content that I genuinely enjoy would show and that someone may be interested in it. Little did I know that I could make money from my blog! Not only that… but I realize I could really share my knowledge with the world about blogging and web design in general.

All my adult life, up to this point, I have held positions in web design, graphic design, and social media management/coordination. I have helped many friends start blogs/websites and I know I can help others as well! So I started this blogging series.

Blogging has its many uses. Maybe you want to write about your life story and journey, or share your favorite beauty tips/tricks. Perhaps you’re a cook and want to share your favorite recipes or baking tips. There are many ways you can utilize a blog to share your passions and interests. In fact, a lot of consumers look to blogs for knowledge and answers.

People enjoy reading from other, real, people.

Blogging can also be very rewarding if you put the work into it. Many influencers and bloggers you may follow call blogging their full-time career. With the right tools, great content, and community following – you can make full-time income while blogging. Neat, right?

HOW TO START A BLOG IN 2018

1. Choose a Blogging Platform

Personally, I use and highly recommend WordPress. There are two different “WordPress” platforms out there. Specifically, I’m talking about WordPress.org – the self-hosted version of WordPress.

There are many reasons why I recommend the self-hosted version of WordPress vs. the free version:

  1. Fully customize-able website, You are in total control.
  2. Easy-to-use platform
  3. Tons of free plugins to boost your blog’s performance
  4. Monetize your site easily
  5. Easy way to sell your products online directly from your blog (if you plan on selling)
  6. Makes your site look professional to viewers and brands

If you plan to blog seriously, you will need to invest in it. Investing in your blog will give you more rewards in the long run. Ever heard of that age-old saying “You have to spend money to make money”? There are many free blogging platforms out there to choose from as well… but if you want your blog to be taken seriously by brands and possibly turn blogging into a career – then self hosting is the way to go!

2. Setup Hosting and Domain Name

Hosting

Hosting is where your site “lives”. It’s where all your files/content/photos and anything that will be on your blog will be stored. For hosting, I highly recommend using Bluehost.

How to make money blogging in 2018

Bluehost has many amazing features for WordPress users along with excellent customer service.

Some of the many benefits of Bluehost:

  1. Start a blog for as little as $3.95 a month
  2. 1-Click WordPress installation
  3. SSD on all Shared and Cloud Hosting Plans
  4. SSL on all WordPress installs (Your site will be secured!)
  5. Free Domain on all Shared Hosting Plans

SSD is huge because it means increased website performance! Faster server speeds, better data security, and more reliable performance.

What’s an SSL? having an SSL Certificate allows a website to accept direct payments (if you plan on selling products with plugins like WooCommerce) and it gives you the “https” before your domain name. Having an SSL will increase Google rankings and potentially SEO! Meaning your blog will be seen by people.

Choose a Domain Name

So now that you’ve chosen hosting… it’s time to choose a domain name. When choosing a domain name, it’s important to come up with a name that readers will remember. It’s also good to avoid having numbers and non-letter characters in your domain. Remember, your domain name is your brand. Try to aim for a “.com” domain name as it is the most commonly used extension.

Setting up your Account with Bluehost

Setting up your Bluehost account is incredibly easy!

If you’re just starting out with blogging and don’t have a following (yet), the basic plan will work just fine. Best part is, it’s only $3.95 a month!

Once you have chosen your Bluehost package, you will be asked for your domain name. Once you fill in your domain name, it will take you to the payment screen to finalize everything.

Congrats! You’re so close to finally launching your blog!

3. Install WordPress

Thankfully, BlueHost makes this step very easy with their 1-click install. They will do the hard work for you and have WordPress ready for you in a couple minutes!

Once WordPress is installed, you will be given your dashboard URL and you can sign in with the credentials you setup during install.

4. Choose a WordPress Theme

There are many free WordPress themes to choose from, or you can invest in your blog a little more and purchase a premium theme. There are many websites to purchase themes from.

5. How to Install a WordPress Theme 2018

Once you have chosen and downloaded a WordPress Theme, it’s time to add it to your blog! You should have downloaded a ZIP folder whenever you downloaded your theme. Don’t worry, you’ll only need this file!

Login to your WordPress Dashboard and go to Appearances > Themes

Once there, click on the “Add New” button near the top of the page.

You will be greeted with a prompt to choose your ZIP file. Once you have selected the ZIP folder containing your WordPress theme, select “install now”. If everything works, it will give a success message.

Your Blog is ready to go!

Customizing your Theme

This part can be tricky, depending on what you want to do with your blog’s design. You can go in through Appearances > Customize in your WordPress dashboard and it’ll take you to a visual editor where you can make changes to your blog’s design. You can add your logo, about me photo, sidebar widgets, etc. It’s all up to you on how you design your blog!

6. Write Content

Your blog is officially started! Now it’s time for you to write your amazing content and share it to social media! Don’t worry, I’ll be going more in-depth about how to make money with affiliate marketing, Pinterest strategies, How to get Instagram followers, and more posts to help you succeed with your blog.
